Glossary

NAS (router) — the device subscribers connect through; in practice a MikroTik router. Register a router

RADIUS — the language the router and Farava speak: the router asks “may this user connect?” and sends usage reports. Port 1812 for sign-in, 1813 for accounting.

PPPoE — the usual way home and office subscribers connect, with a username and password set on their modem.

Hotspot — Wi-Fi access with a login page and a voucher code, no PPPoE username. Hotspot

Shared secret — the password the router and Farava use to recognise each other. It must be the same on both sides.

Authentication — checking the username and password when a subscriber connects; the result is “Accepted” or “Rejected”.

Accounting — the reports a router sends during a session: start, interim updates, and stop. Whether a subscriber is “online”, and their usage, come from these. (Not to be confused with financial accounting.)

Session — one period of a subscriber staying connected, from connect to disconnect. Sessions and usage

CoA / Disconnect — a command Farava sends to the router to close an active session or change its speed.

Customer — a person or business that buys from you. Can have several services.

Subscription — the sale of a plan to a customer, made up of paid periods.

Internet service — the technical connection of a subscription: PPPoE username, password, IP address.

Plan — what you sell: price, speed, quota, and term. Plans

Paid period — the time (for example 30 days) the subscriber has paid for.

Data quota — how much data the subscriber may use in each period.

Customer credit — money the customer has paid and not yet used. Activations and renewals are taken from it.

Credit limit — the most a customer may owe after renewing on credit.

IP pool — a set of addresses Farava hands out to subscribers. IP pools

Access profile — a template of network settings (default pool and timeouts) for services. Access profiles

Observe / enforce mode — in observe mode Farava decides but does not act on the network; in enforce mode the limits are actually applied. Observe and enforce mode

Workspace — the Main ISP, a branch, or a reseller that a staff member works in.

Audit log — the record of every change: who, when, and what. Audit log
